Helpful Tips When Dealing with a Dental Emergency

In order to offer you the best dental care it would be helpful if you could answer a series of important questions when calling our office for an appointment:

  • Exactly what is the nature of the emergency?
  • When did it occur or when did the pain start?
  • Is there any swelling present?
  • On a scale of one to ten, what would you say the degree of the pain is that you are experiencing?
  • Are you experiencing any hot or cold sensations in the area?
  • Are you taking any medication such as pain killers or antibiotics?
  • Do have a broken or knocked-out tooth?

It is critical to get to a dentist as soon as possible after any kind of dental trauma. Most people don’t know that an injured tooth is alive but will begin to die within fifteen to twenty minutes from impact so it important to get to the dentist as soon as possible. In a dental emergency, knowing what to do may be the difference between saving a tooth or losing it.

What to do in a Dental Emergency

For a Broken Tooth…

Rinse your mouth immediately with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce possible swelling. Call a 24-hour emergency dental office for an emergency appointment. If a piece of tooth has broken off, keep it moist and wrap it up to take with you.

For a Knocked Out Tooth…

Pick the tooth up by the top of the tooth without touching the root and if you can, reinsert it back into the socket, holding it gently in place until you reach the dentist’s office. Do not rinse the tooth or try to remove any pieces of tissue attached to the tooth. If you are unable to reinsert the tooth, dip into milk and hold it between your cheek and gums to prevent it from drying out. Then make an appointment with our emergency dental office that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for dental emergencies.

A Very Important Tip Regarding Pain Killers…

If you experience a significant amount of pain, avoid taking aspirin as a pain killer as it may cause more bleeding. You can use Ibuprofen instead of treating the pain but remember that pain killers should never be applied to the gum next to the injured tooth as it could burn the gum tissue. Pain killers may help reduce the pain but you should never rely on pain medication alone as it only treats the symptoms and not the underlying cause of the pain. In order to exactly determine the extent of the injury that is causing you pain a dentist needs to thoroughly examine your mouth.

For Severe Tooth or Gum Pain…

If you experience severe tooth ache or gum pain we highly recommend calling us immediately. Do not put off seeing a dentist as severe pain could be caused by an abscess and infection, a serious condition that needs immediate treatment by a qualified dentist.

For Tooth Extractions…

If you urgently need a tooth extracted you should not delay but contact us for an appointment right away. Although adult teeth are expected to last a lifetime, accidents and other conditions are unavoidable. If you have a decayed tooth that has been damaged beyond repair you may need to have a tooth extraction, especially if it is causing a lot of pain. Fillings or crowns are normally the best option, but if the tooth has deteriorated to such an extent that this is impossible to fix, an emergency extraction may the only option available. In addition, if you have a tooth that increases the risk of infection, you may need to have it extracted as it may adversely affect other healthy teeth around it.
